We've been exploring small Citroëns, beginning with the Visa and moving on to the AX. Next up was the C3, which by way of contrast was an utterly conventional car. It even has self cancelling indicators. By a further concession to normality it was replaced by another C3.
It did though have the option of Sensodrive, a ZF designed automated manual gearbox. It came with flappy paddles for gearchanging purposes so you could feel like an F1 driver. Without any performance, obviously. I've actually driven a few of these and despite what the detractors claim they were all fine.

The way the body is it reminds me of a cat just about ready to pounce.

Really? ZF made this shitty gearbox ? I'm glad they now make the best gearboxes of the market (especially 8 speed auto).
The gearbox is okay... in neutral, 3rd, 4th and 5th. Downshift from 2nd to 1st is way too long, the clutch slips too much and on loose surface it has a totally idiotic management. You have to get used to it.

An interesting description of the most innocuous little car you could imagine!

Really? I hired three different C3 Sensodrives - one petrol, two diesel - and they were all quite satisfactory. I just left them in D and used manual downchanging when entering towns to give a bit of engine braking. I didn't try downchanging to first, but then I wouldn't in a manual car either. No loose surfaces either, just a trip from Aéroport CDG to rural Normandy, a week pottering around country roads there and back again. The diesels did about 5.5 l/100km but were a little noisy above 120 so I just kept to that speed on the autoroutes.

I forgot to say that I mostly drive in (hilly) city and I'm always in manual mode (flappy paddles yeah!) because Drive mode can't "predict" my intentions when I drive and don't know how the declivity of the road is. Beside that, it's not that bad, it's even quite pleasant.

You can get trucks that link their automated gearboxes to sat nav so the box does actually know what's coming up. Quelque chose pour l'avenir, chez Citroën.
